Neck Pain and Headaches: Gone

If you suffer from headaches or neck pain, you are not alone. It is an extremely common condition affecting millions of americans every day of the year. Pain conditions in particular “affect approximately 100 million U.S. adults at a cost of $560-635 billion annually in direct medical treatment costs and lost productivity.” That is WAY too many people and too much money being spent on trying to fix this problem. We at Complete Health Chiropractic Littleton have a proven technique for truly correcting the cause of your pain! We are working to change healthcare and reach more people that want true correction and results that last. One way that healthcare is beginning to catch up with Complete Health Chiropractic Littleton, and other chiropractors practicing Chiropractic BioPhysics, is by starting to identify that a ‘normal’ neck should have a lordotic curve. The cervical lordosis (neck curve) is extremely important to maintain to ensure proper loading and stresses traveling through your spine. When you lose spinal alignment, you begin to put pressures and loads through the improper structures of your spine. This makes the muscles begin to compensate and become chronically sore and painful. Loss of spinal alignment will also cause early degeneration, chronic pain, neurological symptoms, headaches, migraines and dizziness just to name a few!

I want to summarize a medical research article this week published in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science. This research article highlights a patient who is suffering from neck pain and headaches. This patient is a 24 year old male who began having neck pain after dancing. He was treated 24 times over a ten week period with the goal of changing his kyphotic (wrong direction) cervical spine into a lordotic configuration. The authors were able to accomplish putting a cervical lordosis into the neck and the patient reported a complete resolution of symptoms 2 weeks in to the treatment protocol. This patient’s shape of their neck was resulting in acute neck pain and headaches, however, the authors noted some other interesting findings when it comes to a kyphotic cervical spine. “Another long-term consequence of cervical kyphosis deformity is osteoarthritis. It has been demonstrated that a cervical kyphosis exerts 6–10 times the stresses onto the vertebral bodies versus when in the normal lordotic position. This becomes the source of how degenerative changes may occur over the long-term via Wolff’s Law. It becomes obvious that the correction of a cervical kyphosis deformity should be a goal of treatment if diagnosed, regardless of initial complaint.” Even if you have not yet experienced an episode of neck pain, you should still be screened for cervical spinal alignment in order to identify and correct the alignment before any of the aforementioned symptoms show up!
