Scoliosis Treatment using Spinal Manipulation and Rehab Procedures

The case study being summarized this week is a retrospective case series of scoliosis treatment by spinal manipulation and rehab procedures. These rehab procedures included body weighting, pelvic blocking and spinal traction. The spinal manipulation was performed in the mirror image postural position and home care was given to all the participants. The article highlights that previous spinal manipulation intervention has little effect on scoliosis progression or symptomatology improvement.

The addition of the rehab procedures was the key treatment intervention being looked at in this study. The initial and follow up radiographs were measured for Cobb angles. The average improvement measured was 18 degrees in Cobb angles. The below table is from the study article and shows the results of the study:

Table 1

Cobb Angle Measurements after 4–6 Weeks (Degrees)

Subject # Sex/Age Initial Post Reduction

1 F/19 32 24 8

2 M/17 23 8 15

3 F/15 29 11 18

4 F/64 52 19 33

5 F/16 19 4 15

6 F/22 28 11 17

7 F/27 16 2 14

8 F/34 25 11 14

9 F/21 35 20 15

10 F/41 28 13 15

11 F/53 40 22 18

12 F/18 31 9 22

13 F/16 27 14 13

14 F/20 33 7 26

15 F/23 32 18 14

16 F/15 16 4 12

17 M/33 15 4 11

18 M/24 21 6 15

19 F/25 38 11 17

It is interesting to see the improvement and age range. There are some very young people that showed improvement but not as much as other, older patients. All patients showed at least 25% improvement in the Cobb angle measurement.

Chiropractic Biophysics’ technique has more tools to address your posture and scoliosis. At Complete Health Chiropractic we trained to utilize CBP’s analysis and treatment protocols for the spine. We are able to take on more difficult spinal cases that may not be progressing with other chiropractic or rehab techniques. If you have scoliosis or know someone who does, ask them if they would like another option for care. Scoliosis can cause pain and many other issues that interfere with living a normal daily life. You can always try more conservative care such as spinal traction to hopefully avoid surgery. Call today to set up your initial spinal evaluation!
